CHAPTER SEVEN

AJAX

“Ajax.”

Ajax opened his eyes, blinking against the dark bedroom of the cabin. Roselyn’s warm body pressed against his, lighting a fire from his shoulders to his ankles. He dared not acknowledge the lightness in his chest or the ache in his dick—an insistent throbbing that had enthralled him from their first meeting.

“Ajax, can you hear me?” came Chase’s voice over the two-way radio.

He eased away from Roselyn, tucking the covers more securely around her shoulders. Ajax brushed his nose against her smooth cheek before standing. After a week of unconsciousness, fever, and chills, he marveled at her flushed skin even as his body stiffened when she turned into him, chasing his retreating heat.

“I’m here.”

“How is Roselyn?”

“Better. Her fever broke yesterday. I expect she’ll be voicing objections in no time.” He scrubbed his hand over his five-day stubble. “Progress?”

“We halted clearing the roads until this second wave of snowfall eases up.” Chase paused. “That means you’re on your own for a few days. Four, maybe five days with any luck.”

He hadn’t seen the snow this bad in years, compounded with the avalanche, the snowplows would need all five of those days to open the roads. “The voting?”

“A new meeting is scheduled for after Christmas. Tom Buckley didn’t like that one bit.”

“I bet he didn’t.”

“But the town is more concerned with the passage being blocked.”

“The ski lodge?”

“Nah. No damage. When I last spoke to Roger, Mae was showing her guests some good old fashion Southern hospitality.”

Ajax smiled.

“I’ll check in again when this fucking weather eases,” Chase said, ending the chat.

Roselyn groaned and he rushed to her bedside when she tried to sit up. “Take it easy.” Pressing a glass against her dry lips, he tipped the cup of water so she could drink.

“I thought I was dreaming.” She slumped against him. “But you’re still here.”

“Against my better judgment.”

She laughed, then moaned.

“Shhh,” he hushed, holding her against his chest. “Pleasant dreams I hope.”

Her skin heated against his. “I dreamed you bathed me.”

“I’m afraid that wasn’t a dream.” He clenched his teeth as the memory of his fingers between her thighs assaulted him.

“Did you sing to me?” She bit her lip. “A lullaby?”

“A delusion.” He chuckled. “That was Brock howling at the storm.” Ajax would sing a dozen lullabies if they brought her back from death. But he wouldn’t confess to singing them.

“How…how long have I been out of it?” Her hand clutched his thigh as she peered up at him.

“Long enough to put a dent in my bed.”

“I think the dent came from you.” She glanced at his semi hard shaft and flushed.

He didn’t think his cock had fully deflated at any point while she slept in his bed. He caressed her cheek, causing her breath to hitch. Ajax stared at her parted lips for what seemed like eons, noting the slight quiver of interest as her tongue darted to moisten the narrow slit.

“Since the avalanche,” he said. “One week.” One week of sweet torture.

Her brows wrinkled. “When I saw the snow tumbling towards me…I thought for sure—” she swallowed.
